Chapter 2: The Internet

Definition:
A worldwide collection of networks that links millions of businesses, government agencies, educational institutions and individuals.

How to connect the Internet?
2 types of wired connections :

  • wired connections ; Cable Internet service / Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) / Fiber to the Premises
  • wireless connections : Wi-Fi / Mobile broadband / Fixed wireless / Satellite Internet Service
What is IP address?
A sequence of numbers that uniquely identifies each computer or device connected to the Internet

What is Domain Name?
text-based name that corresponds to the IP address

What is DNS Server?
Translates the domain name into its associated IP address

What are services provided from the Internet?
1. Email is the transmission of messages and files via a computer network
2. Instant messaging (IM) is a real-time Internet communications service
3. A chat room is a website or application that permits users to chat with others who are online at the same time
4. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is an Internet standard that permits file uploading and downloading to and from other computers on the Internet

What is Netiquette?
The code of acceptable Internet behavior
